Recipe from Grow Great Grub: Root Vegetable Fries 
Ingredients:
1 large carrot
1 large potato
1 large sweet potato
1 large beet
2 tablespoons olive oil
1 teaspoon chopped fresh thyme
1/2 teaspoon chopped fresh rosemary
Salt and pepper Roasted potatoes are good and all, but a roasted root vegetable medley is just as easy to make and a little bit fancy, too. Substitute any root vegetable, including starchy potatoes, turnip, parsnip, celery root, or rutabaga. While the veggies are roasting, toss a garlic bulb or two into the pan at about the 30-minute mark--the result: easy, creamy garlic! Yum. 1. Preheat the oven to 400°F. Cut the vegetables into 1/2"-wide spears and toss in a roasting pan with olive oil and herbs to coat. Keep the peels on; that’s where the vitamins are. 2. Roast for approximately 40 minutes, turning regularly until all sides have turned a golden brown and the fries are cooked straight through. Serves 2–4

Beautiful book, fun reading July 17, 2010
Eco Mama's Guide To Living Green
LOVE this book! It's filled with color photos--pretty much on every page which is wonderful for me as I'm very visual and it really helps to see exactly what she's talking about. It also makes the book more accessible and fun to read. There are chapters on growing, harvesting, preservation and storage.
Trail's tone is conversational and really makes gardening enjoyable as opposed to more of a chore. I've read gardening books that are so technical and advanced that it scared me off. This is the antidote to that. There are recipes and tips such as to how to deal with pests, this book is a feast and packs a lot of information into its 200 pages. Trail also has a website, You Grow Girl, the namesake of her first book, which I now want to read.

I love this book, if you are new at gardening this is a very good book to get you started. If you are a somewhat experienced gardener this book will remind you of the things that are possible in your garden, i just love all the ideas and recipes!

This book is a great help, especially for the container or balcony gardener. For each plant there is a small box that specifies the depth of the container required to grow the particular plant. This is really handy since a lot of seed packets don't have this info (I'm looking at you, Burpee).

I checked this book out from the library to help figure out my first veggie garden. I read the thing cover to cover, and was really impressed and amazed at the abundance of useful information. I've since purchased the book, as a reference to keep on hand, and I refer to it frequently. There are lots of colorful photos, and it is well organized. Her reasoning is clear as she explains how to choose and improve a location, rotate crops, amend soil, choose companion plants, and deal with pests and disease. She has specific suggestions for varieties of vegetables to try, and explains each vegetable family's pitfalls, with suggestions for how to avoid and deal with them.
She addresses the differences between growing veggies and herbs in containers versus in the ground, and has specific suggestions for which things will benefit from being grown in containers. She also shares some great ideas for grouping containers. My favorite part of this book are her suggestions for companion planting to repel pests, attract good bugs, and for a million other good reasons. She explains how to use companion planting not only to maximizes space, but to improve the overall health and appearance of the garden.
There are also a few recipes included, some look better than others. I'm particularly looking forward to trying the Opal Basil Jelly, and the Herbed Salts.
This book is a really great comprehensive reference for the home organic gardener. I highly recommend it to anyone who wants to understand the interactions occurring in their veggie garden.

I've been growing my family's, and now my own, vegetables for over 17 years, ever since I filled in my kids' sandbox with soil and compost and planted my first seeds. I've got a solid library of gardening books, and try to add one each spring to help me plan my garden, or learn about a particular plant I enjoy raising. This year I chose Grow Great Grub, and I was thrilled when it arrived.
From the moment I opened this fresh garden book, I was drawn in and found new information, luscious pictures, and (some) recipes that made me eager for this year's harvest. Gayla Trail's book seems perfect for the new gardener with just a windowsill or balcony, but she has plenty to offer the suburban gardener with years of experience - me.
I'm delighted that I picked this book to add to my gardening library. It's giving me plenty of ideas on compost, watering, new plants to try, and better ways to raise old favorites. And it's just a great read, too.
