 Raw, Delicious, and Easy December 21, 2008
I've had Alissa Cohen's "Living on Life Food" for about a year and a half now. I would have to say that, for most people, all of the recipes won't deserve 5 stars. But there are enough out-of-this world recipes to make it worth every penny. I'm not sure why Amazon doesn't sell this book. But it is available from individual sellers or Alissa's website.
The first portion of this book is devoted to teaching the reader about raw food--the whys and hows of it (including the all-important "sprouting"). There are also a bunch of journals from individuals who have gone on the diet.
But the best portion of the book are the recipes themselves. For starters, if you have a food processor but not a dehydrator, I recommend trying the mock salmon pate. But, if you want to really use this book you will have to have a dehydrator. At that point, for beginners, I especially suggest the sea wafers, flaxseed crackers, angel hair pasta and marinara (you will need a saladacco, but they are TONS of fun, and the one appliance used for raw food "cooking" that won't cost a fortune...), the raw figs, and the raw cannolis. The batter for the "wrapper" to the raw figs and cannolis is out of this world. Very sweet and creamy, almost like a desert. I think you could use it for a decandent frosting too.
You may have to adapt to the potent tastes of these foods--the flavors are very loud and surprising for one who is used to cooking (which, in addition to flavor, also causes the food to lose important nutrients). But it is very worth it. After several weeks on this food, it can make your skin softer, and your hair and nails sturdier. After a bit longer it can energize you too, and in general makes you feel better than when eating cooked food (especially if that cooked food is high in salt and preservatives).

This book deserves five stars for the information it contains. Unfortunately, the format in which the material has been published leaves much to be desired. The text size used in this book is quite large, and each page features huge margins that take up a third of the available space per page. A large portion of this book is simply blank space!
If this book had been published with normal margins and a standard font size, the book would be about one third of the size of this edition without leaving out a single line of the original material. In short, the large size of this book is completely deceptive. I rate the format of this edition as one star.
I would love to see this book published in a standard-size format. It would contain all the valuable information of this edition, but at one third the length and one third the price.
Good info, bad recipes December 17, 2008
I really want to like this book. The information in the first have of the book is helpful. I enjoyed reading about her food journey and the testimonies of others. But each recipe I've tried has been horrible. I absolutely love cooking and working with food; I'm not an amateur. Each recipe sounds like a good idea but comes out inedible. I've thrown away most of the food I've made from this book.

I am an avid raw foodie and this is the best book yet. Informative inspiring and lots of delicious recipes that are simple to prepare.
Great info & taste, but not totally healthy November 12, 2008
This was my first introduction to raw foods so read the first few chapters cover to cover and tried several of the recipes. Most were VERY good, but the diet didn't give me the tons of energy I'd hoped/read about. After reading more online about the raw diet, I discovered that the majority of the recipes out there are high in fat -- some even moreso than the standard American diet! I'm now looking into the 80/10/10 approach to eating raw for the most part, but plan to still use recipes from this book when I feel like splurging!
