Product Description
Author Barbara Kingsolver and her family abandoned the industrial-food pipeline to live a rural lifeâvowing that, for one year, they'd only buy food raised in their own neighborhood, grow it themselves, or learn to live without it. Part memoir, part journalistic investigation, Animal, Vegetable, Miracle is an enthralling narrative that will open your eyes in a hundred new ways to an old truth: You are what you eat.

Like a field guide for food! July 26, 2010 csteinert This book has changed the way I shop, cook, and eat. I recommend it to EVERYONE.
Dry, preachy, and self-important...skip this one July 11, 2010 annielaurie (Saint Paul, MN) 3 out of 4 found this review helpful
Gosh, I really wanted to love this book. Instead, I found myself going online and perusing all the 1- and 2-star reviews and nodding my head. I agreed with every single negative adjective supplied in the reviews. After just two chapters I found myself bored to tears and irritated by the author's (I mean, authors') pompous musings.
Only two positives, and one isn't even about the book: I purchased it, much to my dismay now!, at a local, independent bookstore in a small Minnesota town, for full price, when I knew full well I could have waited a couple of days and bought it from Amazon for much less.
And secondly, and more importantly, on page 5, under the heading 'Oily Food,' there is a fascinating statistic that I hope is true, and that I also believe is the only important piece of knowledge I gleaned from this incredibly boring book: "If every U.S. citizen ate just one meal a week (any meal) composed of locally and organically raised meats and produce, we would reduce our country's oil consumption by over 1.1 million barrels of oil EVERY WEEK." Well, wow. I don't know how such a claim can be verified, or how Mr. Hopp arrived at such a figure (for instance, did he take into account the number of gallons of oil all of us farmers' market visitors use in getting to and from the farmers' market, or the co-op?), but I hope it's legit. That alone should give us normal folk a tiny glimmer of hope for our country's future.
I echo many others' comments, though, when I urge the potential reader just to check this book out from the library. It's most definitely not a keeper, and I was most definitely disappointed in its content.
Loved the book! July 11, 2010 Ann November-moss (MD) I listened to the book on CD first, and loved it so much, I wanted a hard copy of my own to refer back to. The CD is narrated by the authors and I find Barbara Kingsolver to be one of the most pleasant narrators I have listened to. Great book!
FOOD FOR THOUGHT July 8, 2010 Lynne Farr Reading "Animal, Vegetable, Mineral," I learned when not to pick asparagus; who's for and against genetically modified foods; where to buy heritage seeds; that tomato plants habitually lose their lower leaves (not to worry); how to make mozzarella cheese; how to spell mozzarella cheese; how mass produced beef, pork, and chickens are raised; what dairy products are okay for the lactose intolerant; when to plant and harvest potatoes; and many other farm-fresh facts. Food, family, and turkey sex: what more could you ask of a book? Lynne Farr, author of OFF THE GRID WITHOUT A PADDLE Off The Grid Without A Paddle
Inspiring July 5, 2010 Michelle C. Zivic After reading this book, I am ispired to seek out local sources for my weekly grocery shopping. Our small garden will be expaning a bit next year also. The stories are funny and eye opening. You will stop and think now, how far did my food travel to get here and can I buy this locally instead?
